Root Canals

Do you have a toothache that won’t quit? Do you feel pain in your gums or are your gums swollen around a certain tooth? Does it hurt when you eat or drink something hot or cold? If so, we may be able to help you.

Some patients may experience severe pain, pressure, sensitivity, or swelling in or around a particular tooth. This may oftentimes be a sign of a tooth that requires a root canal. A root canal is required when the dental pulp (inner tissues) of a tooth is permanently damaged from trauma or tooth decay. Dental pulp was necessary to your tooth when your mouth was still growing. But once you reach adulthood, dental pulp, also called root pulp, is unnecessary and can become infected. This infection in the root pulp is treated with root canal therapy.

The Root Canal Procedure

  • Dr. drills into the tooth
  • The dental pulp is removed (which includes the blood supply, nerves, and tissue)
  • Landmark Smiles then disinfects the canals of the tooth.
  • A filling (often a sedative filling) is placed into the canals of the tooth.
  • Landmark Smiles then rebuilds the tooth with a post and a protective dental crown.

By completing a root canal, Landmark Smiles of Scottsdale can help you save your natural tooth and avoid having an extraction altogether. Also, the tooth is far less likely to ever have any infection again as dental crowns are sturdy and durable. And, of course, your toothache is gone!

Landmark Smiles of Scottsdale uses a number of technological tools in our office in order to effectively and accurately diagnose and care for our patients.  Digital x-rays are used to diagnose and prepare for a root canal as well as to permit Dr. Foley to see exactly where the canals are.  Through vitality testing, he confirms the need for root canal therapy.

Unlike other dental offices, Landmark Smiles of Scottsdale can most often perform a root canal without referring our patients to an endodontist. Occasionally, in extreme cases, it may be necessary to refer the patient to one of our trusted endodontic specialists for more extensive root canal treatment.   After completion of the root canal therapy, the restoration treatment will be performed by Landmark Smiles of Scottsdale.  With more than 35 years of experience and thousands of satisfied patients, Landmark Smiles of Scottsdale may be the place for you and your family to visit for your overall oral health care.

We also offer dental sedation for any procedure.  If you have root canal or general dental anxiety, please ask us about this option. We want you to be comfortable and relaxed during your treatment here. We offer oral conscious sedation. You will be awake and aware, just not as easily stimulated or upset. We also offer IV sedation, which will enhance your relaxation and you can sleep through your treatment.
